If you're looking for an outside bet for the 2014 World Cup, how about Colombia?

Yes, we've heard it all before in the USA in 1994 when things ended in disaster after high expectations, and even being tipped by Pele as potential winners.

Rumours of involvement with betting syndicates, drug cartels and death threats to the coach left the team in turmoil and they failed to even make it out of the group stage.

Could it be any different this time around if the South Americans make it to Brazil? Certainly they'll be nearer to home - on their own continent for starters.

In their qualifying campaign so far the Colombians have won away in the altitude of Bolivia (no mean feat), in Chile and in Peru, and also had home wins against Paraguay and Uruguay, including an impressive 4-0 hammering.

They lie third in the table with a game in hand on Ecuador who are just a point ahead, so things are looking rosy for them at the moment.

They boast one of the top and most sought after strikers in the world in Atletico Madrid’s Falcao, who could set the tournament alight if he takes his current form into World Cup 2014.

Radamel Falcao Garcia Zarate, to give him his full name, has so far scored 43 goals in 53 games for Atletico and 15 goals for Colombia. With fellow strikers Teofilo Gutierrez, scoring eight goals in 19 internationals, and Jackson Martinez with six in 16, the team is full of goals.

Several of the squad such as Juan Zuniga, Pablo Armero, Cristian Zapata, Juan Cuadrado and youngster Luis Muriel play in Serie A and the team has also risen to the lofty heights of number five in the FIFA World Rankings.

On some betting websites, Colombia can be backed at 35-1, with England priced a lot lower. I know who I’d rather have an each way punt on, do you?
