Wycombe’s 1-0 win against Gillingham in Npower League Two was overshadowed last night, when goalkeeper Jordan Archer was attacked by a fan.

The 19-year-old stopper was poised to take a late goal kick for the Chairboys, with Gareth Ainsworth’s side on the cusp of a crucial victory against the high-flying Gills thanks to Matt McClure's 85th minute strike.

But, as the Tottenham Hotspur loanee placed the ball on the ground, he was jumped on and knocked to the ground by a supporter. Stewards quickly apprehended the intruder.

"A 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and is currently in custody following an incident in the 93rd minute of the Gillingham v Wycombe match last night,” said Kent police in a statement this morning.

The incident is the second high-profile case involving a goalkeeper and a fan this season, with a Leeds United supporter knocking Sheffield Wednesday stopper Chris Kirkland to the ground back in October.

For the record, that ‘fan’ was jailed for four months, and this teenager can expect a lengthy ban from the Priestfield Stadium at the very least.
