Sir Alex Ferguson revealed Cristiano Ronaldo visited the Manchester United dressing room after their 1-1 Champions League draw with Real Madrid last night.

Ronaldo cancelled out Danny Welbeck's 20th minute opener in the last-16 tie at the Bernabeu with a superb header, but refused to celebrate his goal having spent six years at Old Trafford before joining Real Madrid in 2009 for a world-record £80 million fee.

The 28-year-old also made a point of acknowledging Manchester United's travelling supporters and the visitors dug-out after his 30th minute goal.

Ferguson revealed after the game that Ronaldo had been welcomed into the Red Devils' changing room to mingle with his former team-mates.

'I spoke to him. He is sitting in our dressing room, talking to the lads,' said the United boss.

'He had six years with us and I am proud of how he flourished.'

The Scot added of Ronaldo's goal: 'I blamed Patrice Evra for not challenging for his goal until I saw the replay and felt a bit stupid.

'His knee is about as high as Evra's head - phenomenal.

'I don't think any other player in the world can do that, certainly not Messi.'

Ronaldo's goal ensures the last-16 tie is finely balanced going into the second leg at Old Trafford next month.

Having greeted Ferguson with a hug after the full-time whistle, Ronaldo, now leading scorer in the Champions League this term with seven goals, admitted it was difficult facing his former side.

'I was in Manchester for six years so tonight was very emotional for me,' the Portuguese international said.

'I scored a goal but I didn't celebrate out of respect.

'Maybe United are favourites now, maybe not. Anything can happen. Sometimes we are better away than at home so we will see.'
