Manchester United would be foolish to sign Victor Valdes

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes is no better than Manchester United's current number one David De Gea

Buying Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes would be a huge mistake for Manchester United.

If recent reports are true that Sir Alex Ferguson is interested in signing the Spaniard - who has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Camp Nou - at the end of the season, the question that has to be asked, is he really any better than David De Gea.

The 22-year-old former Atletico Madrid star has his detractors, and admittedly has a tendency to flap at crosses, but doesn't every other continental goalkeeper, Valdes included?

At 31, Valdes should be in his prime, but is it really worth ditching an up-and-coming Old Trafford star of the future for one who is nine years De Gea's senior, and arguably no better?

Playing in goal for Barcelona in La Liga these days is a bit like playing in goal for Celtic in the Scottish Premier League - most weeks you could bring a book to read during the game.

Even Iker Casillas, Real Madrid's long term No.1, and club legend, has a tendency to flap at crosses.

Unless Manchester United were to suddenly discover the new Peter Schmeichel, I really don't see the point in ditching De Gea.

After all he was man of the match in the recent game with Real Madrid, and although he will make errors again, there can't be a young goalkeeper out there with as much potential.
