Chelsea and Manchester City are on ‘red alert’ over the availability of Jose Mourinho, according to reports.

The Daily Express claims both Premier League clubs have been given ‘fresh hope’ in their pursuit of the former Porto chief, with the 50-year-old on the managerial shortlist for both positions.

Manuel Pellegrini and Michael Laudrup are also in contention to replace Roberto Mancini at the Etihad Stadium, according to the report, with the Citizens chief coming under increasing pressure at the home of he champions.

Manchester City appear set to lose their domestic crown to rivals Manchester United this season, whilst an early exit from the Champions League hasn’t helped the Italian’s cause.

The Citizens' solitary chance of silverware would appear to be in the FA Cup, and it's up for debate as to whether that will be enough to save Mancini.

Chelsea, meanwhile, appointed Rafa Benitez on an interim basis after the sacking of Roberto di Matteo at Stamford Bridge.

However, the Spaniard has failed to capture the imagination of the fans in west London, and his spell in charge of the Blues looks set to be short-lived.

Mourinho, a firm fans favourite at Chelsea after his successful three-and-a-half year spell at the club between 2004 and 2007, would certainly be a well-received appointment in the terraces, and speculation suggests he will leave the La Liga champions at the end of the season and be replaced by Carlo Ancelotti.

But, with other top clubs around Europe linked with 'the special one' only last month, the two English giants are unlikely to have things all their own way if they pursue the Los Blancos chief.
