Manchester United are working on a deal to bring Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo back to the club in the summer transfer window, it was been claimed.

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United are working on a stunning package worth £55 million to sign the Portugal captain, whose future as a Real Madrid player would appear to be in serious doubt.

A deal this size would smash Manchester United's previous transfer record of £30.75 million paid to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham in 2008, and would take Ronaldo's career total fee beyond £145 million following his initial move to Old Trafford and world record switch to Real Madrid.

Manchester United will reportedly negate the stumbling block of Ronaldo's wage demands not falling in line with UEFA's imminent Financial Fair Play Regulations by allowing the 28-year-old to sign separate agreements with the club's sponsors.

Chevrolet, Manchester United's new club sponsor, are reported to be ready to make Ronaldo their global ambassador should he return to Old Trafford, recognising the huge global appeal the Real Madrid forward could have in the build up to the 2014 World Cup.

However, Manchester United's deal with Chevrolet's parent company GM Motors is not due to begin until next year but, claims the Daily Star, the club are in talks with current sponsors Aon about buying out the remainder of their contract.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, will return to Old Trafford for the first time since his departure in less than two weeks, as Real Madrid travel to Manchester to contest the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.
