A South American match ended in chaos on Wednesday night, as Arsenal players went toe-to-toe with riot police following a 5-2 defeat to Atletico Mineiro.

Brazilian legend Ronaldinho struck twice for the victors, but it was the amazing confrontation post-match which will live long in the memory following the Copa Libertadores clash.

At least four players from the Arsenal team have subsequently been detained for questioning after they decided to get physical with the military police, with some kicking and pushing the armed guards.

The incident occurred as several members of the team looked to surround the referee and officials, before the officers intervened to protect the men in the middle.

Ugly scenes followed, and a cop can be seen preparing a gun to fire rubber bullets if required.

“The officers were positioned to provide safety to the visiting players,” said police spokeswoman Claudia Romualdo, according to The Sun.

“What happened is deplorable. This is not about sport.”

Ronaldinho had earlier celebrated one of his goals with a gun gesture, and the former Barcelona star’s team are already through to the knockout phase of South America’s equivalent of the Champions League.
