Liverpool and Manchester United look set to be disappointed with the news that summer target Jackson Martinez is set sign a new deal.

According to Portuguese publication A Bola, the prolific striker has agreed terms with FC Porto to extend his contract.

Both Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and his counterpart at Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers, have been linked with an interest in the Colombian.

The Anfield club have been light of effective striking options this season and, while the signing of Daniel Sturridge has improved things, they may need to add extra firepower if they want to push into the Champions League spots next season.

There is also the issue of Luis Suarez’s future on Merseyside, as he recently admitted he could leave Liverpool if a Champions League club made an enticing offer.

The Old Trafford chief has no such problems; Manchester United’s strike force is an embarrassment of riches, with Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez all vying for places in team.

However, both Rooney and Hernandez have been linked with moves away from Manchester United this summer and interest in Martinez could be down to one of them possibly departing.

Martinez only joined Porto last summer but has been in terrific form since, scoring 28 goals in just 36 games for the Portuguese side.

Any deal will now be difficult to pull off for either Liverpool or Manchester United as the A Bola report claim he is now one of the best paid players at the club.

Wages in Portugal are not as substantial as those in the Premier League but huge buyout clauses are common in Portugal and can push up transfer fees substantially.
