Gary O'Neil believes three more points for West Ham United will secure their place in next season's Barclays Premier League.

Sam Allardyce's men travel to St Mary's on Saturday looking to move further away from the relegation scrap as they take on giant-killers Southampton, and a win could potentially lift them up to 10th place.

The Hammers are just six points off the relegation zone and O'Neil knows that anything can happen from now until the end of the campaign, especially in such a hotly contested fight to avoid the drop.

"I don't think we're counting ourselves as safe yet because we're only six points above the bottom three", he told West Ham TV.

If the Hammers lose and results go against them, the club could drop from 12th to 15th after this weekend's fixtures, but the ex-Pompey man is focused on the challenge ahead.

"I don't think its completely done and dusted but we're looking to hit as many points as we can anyway - we're not going to get 40 and stop", he added.

The East London outfit face a tough run of games, including matches against Manchester United and Manchester City in the next four fixtures.

However, it seems that West Ham are confident of their survival and with the in-form Andy Carroll set to return, it will be a tough call to predict the outcome of Saturday's match.

"Our away form has picked up with a win at Stoke and draw at Anfield after five straight defeats on the road. Hopefully our improved form can continue", he concluded.

If Allardyce's team survive their returning season to the Premier League, and with the Olympic Stadium on the horizon, there could be a bright future ahead for all involved at West Ham United.
