Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has vowed to become a first-team regular once again, dampening speculation he is set for an Anfield exit this summer.

The Slovakian international, who was named Liverpool’s best player last season, has struggled for form this term and is currently biding his time on the bench with manager Brendan Rodgers preferring to start with Jamie Carragher.

The 28-year-old’s plight has also been exacerbated by fitness issues, restricting him to just 23 league appearances this season.

Consequently, Skrtel has been linked with a move away from Anfield in the summer window, though the defender has poured cold water on such talk, revealing his desire to reinstate himself as a regular member of the starting eleven.

He told the club’s official website: "This is what happens in football and this time it was my turn.

"I have to respect it and wait for my chance. And I hope my chance will come before the end of the season.

"Those who know me know that I will fight for my place in the team."

Although Liverpool have improved on the attacking front compared to last season, their defence has been guilty of shipping too many goals.

The fact that Carragher is set to retire at the end of the year is likely to prompt Rodgers into making some summer reinforcements to strengthen his back-line, making it all the more difficult for Skrtel to wrestle back his regular position in the team.
