Barcelona defender Eric Abidal believes it is “essential” for his team to win this season’s Champions League for coach Tito Vilanova.

The former France international, who has only just returned to action following over a year out due to a liver transplant, said that it is imperative that his side wins the competition to help lift the spirits of their manager.

Vilanova has recently returned to the Barca dugout after recovering from treatment he received for his cancer illness and now Abidal is hoping that his side can triumph in Europe and dedicate the victory to their boss.

The 33-year-old insisted that he, and the rest of the squad, is now completely focused on ending a successful season with a league and European Cup double.

According to Goal he said: "All four teams left [in the draw] are good, but we want to get to the final and win the cup for Tito. He's had a really tough time. It's essential that we get through [to the final]."

It has just been revealed that Barcelona will face Bayern Munich in the semi-finals of the Champions League and so they will be looking to overcome the Germans and possibly set up a Clasico clash against rivals Real Madrid for the final at Wembley on May 25.
