During the north London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal just a few weeks ago, one fan threw a banana at Gareth Bale while the Welshman was taking a corner.

The action of throwing a banana on the pitch during a football match is in very poor taste, regardless, but it is usually signifies racism aimed at black players.

In Gareth Bale’s case it could be because of internet jokers posting doctored photos of Bale as a monkey, saying that the Spurs' superstar resembles the primate.

The banana thrower in this instance, Thomas Flint, was accused by a judge of disgraceful behaviour for throwing the fruit and for swearing at Tottenham fans.

District Judge Rebecca Crane said Flint had allowed his passion for football "to boil over into hostility for a single player and the opposing team and that it could have boiled over into violence."

After admitting to throwing the banana, Flint will not be allowed to attend football matches for three years and was fined £250.

Arsenal had said after the match that if the fan who threw the banana was identified and found guilty, that he or she will be banned for life.

Bale has been outstanding for Spurs this season and is regarded as one of the world’s best after his incredible form for the White Hart Lane club.

Tottenham now face the tough task of keeping their top four spot in the Premier League and will be hoping Bale makes a speedy recovery to aid them in their bid for Champions League football.
