Arsenal representatives have reportedly met with those of Swansea defender Ashley Williams, amid apparent interest from Liverpool, to discuss a proposed move to the Emirates Stadium during the summer transfer window.

According to, advisors to the Wales international visited Arsenal in order to talk about a possible transfer, and the Gunners are prepared to contest Liverpool for the £12 million-rated centre-back come the end of the season.

Arsene Wenger is reported to have identified Williams as a player with the credentials to bring some added steel to his Arsenal defence, with the Frenchman keen to bolster his backline in time for the next campaign.

Williams has proven himself a more than competent Premier League performer in two seasons in the top-flight with Swansea and, aged almost 29, the Wales captain is experienced enough not to be viewed as a potentially risky acquisition.

Recruiting another central defender is reported to be a summer priority for Arsenal, with the inconsistent form of captain Thomas Vermalen this season prompting Wenger to review his options.

Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are establishing themselves as Arsenal's first-choice pairing, with Vermaelen only regaining a starting berth in the weekend defeat of Norwich due to the suspension of the former.

Arsenal have also been linked with Nicolas N'Koulou of Marseille, while Athletic Bilbao's Fernando Amorebieta was also touted as a target, but the Venezuelan is set to sign for Fulham.
