An immense amount of speculation has surrounded Manchester United and the players who could potentially be exiting Old Trafford this summer. As many as six players could be heading out as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to trim the wage bill and generate funds to secure his top transfer targets, but who will he look to sign this summer?

Manchester United are not short of targets - a new player is linked with a move every other week and as fans, we have to work out the facts from the fiction. If Sir Alex does manage to recoup a significant sum of money on players who he deems surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, who are their potential replacements?

As the season draws to a close and with Manchester United on the verge of reclaiming their Premier League crown, now seems like a good time to look at 12 possible transfer deals to take place at Old Trafford in the coming weeks.

Possible departures:

There is not much explaining to do about the curious case of Nani. On his day he is unstoppable but we need to see it more. He is one of the most inconsistent players Manchester United have and it's frustrating when you consider the potential and talent Nani possesses. Nani will not be short of suitors, now it is time to wait for the right offer.

Antonio Valencia

Another winger who has seen his form dip quite considerably, and again it is frustrating because we have previously seen what Valencia is capable of, managing to steamroll past defenders with his blistering pace and immense strength. Valencia has not been able to achieve the same success in the position as last year. With Wilfried Zaha arriving in the summer, it remains to be seen whether he can adapt quickly enough, and whether selling Valencia will be a mistake.

Much like Nani, the potential is there, but many Manchester United fans would believe the time to prove himself is finally over. After spending big on the highly-rated Brazilian midfielder, it is obvious United cannot recoup the entire fee, but Sir Alex would not want to sell too cheaply either, many have touted that Anderson could be used as a makeweight in a deal which could see FC Porto winger James Rodriguez go the other way.

Ashley Young

Can Manchester United really risk letting go of a third winger in the same window? Obviously at this stage it is mere speculation but one has to understand that without replacing two of the three, the wide area will not see an improvement at all. Instead, it will be a huge risk.

Javier Hernandez

The one name linked with an exit which Manchester United fans don't want to see come to fruition, is Chicharito. The Mexican ace was an instant hit at Old Trafford and although he is stuck to the bench more often than not, he performs admirably when he is given time on the pitch. He doesn’t only need to stay at Manchester United, he needs to be given more game time and with news that Hernandez could be used as part of a deal to bring Radamel Falcao to Manchester United, many fans would argue it should not be Hernandez leaving.

Wayne Rooney

Ferguson has had to deny reports that Rooney could be on his way to PSG, but in football you cannot predict anything until it is actually done. Rumour has it that he could be handed a new deal at Manchester United, whilst other media outlets suggest that Manchester United are simply waiting for the right offer to come in. Keeping England's best player is a must.

Potential arrivals:

Kevin Strootman | PSV

The midfield can be strengthened by adding this Dutch enforcer playing for PSV Eindhoven. He is not afraid to get stuck into a tackle and has great energy and determination about him, drawing comparisons to Manchester United legend, Roy Keane. He has great distribution and is very versatile and can occupy many positions in the midfield, whether it is more defensive based or even as an advanced playmaker.

Radame Falcao | Atletico Madrid

Falcao is the biggest name to have been linked with a move to Old Trafford. If Sir Alex really wants him in his United side next season, then he can expect to spend a large chunk of his summer transfer budget, or may even have to reluctantly see fan favourite Javier Hernandez go the other way.

Robert Lewandowski | Borussia Dortmund

If one striker leaves Manchester United, then expect one in, whether it is Falcao or Lewandowski, the big names continue to be linked with Manchester United. Lewandowski has been linked on a number of occasions but more recently he has been linked with the likes of Bayern Munich and Arsenal, so if United are interested, expect a move early in the window to snap up the Polish International.

Mario Gotze | Borussia Dortmund

The highly-rated Dortmund star is wanted by many leading European clubs, however Gotze mentioned he feels attracted to Manchester United, a decision which could rule in United’s favour. Rated as one of the best youngsters in European football, snapping him up will make up for missing out on Lucas Moura to PSG last year, and would certainly be a top replacement in the midfield if the likes of Young and Valencia leave the club.

Erik Lamela | AS Roma

Lamela is United's plan B if a move for James Rodriguez doesn't come off. Lamela is very quick, has great dribbling ability and has the confidence and capability to beat defending players whether it is on the wings or through the middle. He possesses a great long-shot as well as the vision to pick out vital passes to teammates - he could be the answer to Ferguson's winger dilemma.

Raphael Varane | Real Madrid

Who wouldn’t want this youngster in their team? At only 19-years-old he is starting for Real Madrid, possibly the biggest club in the world. He impressed against Manchester United in the Champions League and Ferguson would be willing to splash the cash on the youngster, who was linked with Manchester United before his move to Madrid, especially with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic edging closer to retirement. Varane would definitely be seen as the future star for Manchester United.
