Bayern Munich and Barcelona face each other in the Champions League semi-finals, and former Netherlands international Mark van Bommel believes the winners will go on to lift the trophy.

Bayer, the recently-crowned Bundesliga champions, have the chance to shape the contest in their favour right away by subduing the La Liga leaders in front of nearly 80,000 home fans on Tuesday evening.

But, looking at the situation from another perspective, it also means that Barcelona have the opportunity to impose themselves in the decider at the Nou Camp, just as they did against AC Milan and PSG earlier in the competition.

For Dutch midfielder and PSV star Van Bommel, who played for both clubs, the idea of hosting the second leg at the Nou Camp makes Barcelona narrow favourites, overall.

Speaking to the Spanish club’s official website, he said: “In such an evenly balanced tie, [playing the return leg in Spain] that could be decisive.

“Barca has a very good team and has appeared in six consecutive semi-finals, which says a lot.”

Indeed, since their Last-16 exit back in 2005, following their bitter defeat to Chelsea, Barcelona have never failed to reach the semis. Even more impressively, Los Cules have reached three finals since then and have gone on to lift the trophy on all three occasions.

Now, former Bavarian Van Bommel is confident that Barca can go on to win their fourth Champions League title in seven years. However, he believes Bayern Munich’s chances of becoming kings of Europe this season are virtually equal.

“Whoever wins the tie will be champions,” he predicted.

The winning side will face either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund at the Wembley Stadium final on May 25 - and while many are relishing the possibilities of a Clasico final, Van Bommel thinks otherwise:

“Bayern vs Barca should have been the final,” he asserted.
