Former Real Madrid defender Michel Salgado has claimed Jose Mourinho’s finest accomplishment would be bringing the Champions League back to the Bernabeu.

The Spaniard was in the team the last time Los Blancos won the competition – in 2002 – and has suggested that should do they it this year, it will be the highlight of the Portuguese’s career.

“Winning the Champions League here for Mourinho would prove a lot,” Salgado told BBC Sport.

“It would be his biggest achievement – the top thing is winning the Champions League with Real Madrid.”

The Spanish champions have won the competition an unprecedented nine times – but have been unable to add to their tally during the last decade.

Ex-Chelsea boss Mourinho has aspirations of becoming the first manager to win the trophy with three different clubs. His first two successes came at Porto and Inter Milan.

But Salgado insists winning the Champions League with Real Madrid would be more special, because of the demands of supporters.

He said: “It is not the same winning the Champions League with any other club as it is with Real Madrid.

“Real Madrid are really demanding and expectations are very big.”

Despite currently trailing La Liga leaders Barcelona by 13 points, there is feeling among some quarters that Real Madrid’s best chance to end their European Cup woes is this season.

However Salgado acknowledges that it will be very difficult, heaping particular praise on German champions Bayern Munich.

“The most complete team in Europe is Bayern Munich,” he suggested. “They have got everything.”
