Massadio Haidara is hoping to grab his Premier League opportunity with both hands, after making his full domestic debut against West Brom at the weekend.

The French full-back impressed after he was drafted into the squad following a hamstring injury to Davide Santon.

The 20-year-old told the official Newcastle website: “It was a pleasure and an honour to make my first Premier League start.”

“We could have won the game because we had a lot of opportunities but it is a good point which we can be happy with,” he added.

Haidara was one of Alan Pardew’s January signings but the defender has had to wait patiently for his first league start.

The Magpies are not completely safe yet, despite being six points clear of the relegation zone.

“The most important thing for us is to stay in the Premier League,” admitted the defender.

“This point could be a big one in us staying up.”

Newcastle entertain Liverpool on Saturday knowing that a win will see them reach the fabled 40-point mark.

Haidara hopes he has done enough to retain his position in the team, but acknowledges he must prove his worth if given another chance.

“With Davide’s injury there is definitely a position for me to fill, but I must show that I am worthy of it,” he said.

“I have to go out there and give the best performances I can when I am called upon.”

The former Nancy player – who has represented his country up to u21 level – is likely to feature again this weekend with Santon’s recovery not thought to be complete.
