Andre Santos has revealed that being a left-back was a new experience for him once he moved to Arsenal and admitted that he only learnt how to defend at the north London club.

Santos joined Arsenal back in the summer of 2011 from Turkish outfit Fenerbache so that he could give competition with regular left-back Kieran Gibbs, but he was unable to settle at the Emirates Stadium.

This season may be the end of Santos' Arsenal career after he was sent out on loan to Brazilian side Gremio after the club brought in Malaga left-back Nacho Monreal during Gibbs' injury that kept him sidelined for six weeks.

Santos failed to impress the majority of the Arsenal fans during his brief time at the club and then he made his name even worse when he was seen swapping shirts with Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, who left the club in the summer after refusing a contract extension at the Emirates, at half-time during their match at Old Trafford.

Despite leaving on loan, Santos himself revealed he wants to come back to Arsenal after the loan spell, but it appears that the Gunners are prepared to sell the 30-year-old on a permanent deal.

Santos told reporters: "It was [in England] that I learnt I was a full-back, whose first priority is to defend properly and to get forward only when it's necessary.

"I made mistakes, which were more to do with me getting distracted than anything else.

"You have to maintain maximum focus because there are thousands of players who want your place."
