Lionel Messi returned for his first La Liga game in almost a month and scored a sensational goal, helping his side secure a 2-2 draw against Athletic Bilbao.

The Argentinian international has been struggling with injury since picking up a knock against Paris-Saint Germain in March, and has been saved for European fixtures.

Although he could do little about Barcelona’s 4-0 Champions League semi-final defeat against Bayern Munich on Tuesday, Messi returned to domestic competition in style, embarking on a sensational mazy run and slotting home in truly sensational style.

The Catalan club fell behind in the game at the San Mames Stadium to a goal from winger Susaeta before Messi’s outrageous equaliser. Alexis Sanchez looked to have given his side all three points before Ander Herrera earned his side a point late on.

The result, combined with Real Madrid’s win over Atletico Madrid, means Barcelona’s lead at the top has been cut to 11 points – putting their title winning party on hold for another week with five games to go.
