Manchester United have already identified their main targets this summer and are hot on the heels of possible signings before the transfer window reopens, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Sun reports how the 71-year-old Scot spoke openly about the club's transfer tactics, and said although the newly crowned Premier League champions can't compete with the likes of Chelsea or local rivals Manchester City in terms of money, with the right planning they can still be competitive in the market.

"Hopefully the players we bring into the club in the next year or so will be of the quality we need," said Ferguson.

"We're competitive in the market — we're not Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of money but we're competitive."

Arsenal have also been tipped for a busy summer, as Arsene Wenger looks to close the gap on Manchester United, who claimed the domestic title this year with four games still to spare.

That achievement meant that Gunners players welcomed Ferguson's men onto the Emirates Stadium pitch with a guard of honour, before playing out a 1-1 draw in north London on Sunday.

From the outside looking in at Old Trafford, it might seem that the players and staff are ready to embark on their summer holidays, given that the Premier League title is already wrapped up.

But, Ferguson stressed that it couldn't be farther from the truth with plenty of work going on behind the scenes, with attention already turning to next season.

"We've been doing a bit of work on that over the last three or four months, targeting who the players are that we feel could enhance us, make us better or help us maintain the level we're at."
