Cristiano Ronaldo has praised the Real Madrid supporters after their 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.

Los Blancos won on the night but couldn’t find the third goal that was needed to progress to the Champions League final.

Ronaldo told the official club website: “The fans were amazing, they supported us a lot and it spurred me on.

“We are grateful for what they did. We’re sorry that we could not give the fans the joy they deserved. We fought to the end and I’m sure that next year we’ll be there.”

A late surge from Madrid was not enough to undo the damage done in Germany last week. Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos both scored to set up a rousing finale, but the Spaniards could not capitalise in added time.

Despite the setback, Jose Mourinho’s side still has a cup final to look forward to before the season draws to a close.

Ronaldo said: “The Copa del Rey is a different competition. It will be a different match and if we go out with the same desire I am sure we will win.”

Real Madrid are second in La Liga but realistically have no chance of catching rivals Barcelona – who were also knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage.

Their season now hinges on the Spanish Cup, with neighbours Atletico Madrid standing between them and the trophy on 17 May.
