Arsenal have been warned that summer transfer target Matthew Lowton will not be allowed to leave.

According to Metro, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is keen on recruiting the 23-year-old, but Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is determined to hang on to him.

Villas signed Lowton for £2million from Sheffield United last summer and he has been impressive despite the Midlands club struggling to battle against relegation.

Arsenal are expected to need a replacement at right-back this summer with Bacary Sagna yet to renew his current deal, which expires in the summer of 2014.

The France international has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain and his departure would leave Arsenal with only the inexperienced Carl Jenkinson in that position.

Lambert accepted speculation about his players was unavoidable but said he was only taking it as a positive and insisted no player would be sold if he did not want them to be.

“You can’t stop people speculating. That’s football all over the world. But he’s our player,” he told reporters.

“He’s been playing very well. If people are talking about him, that means he’s playing well.

“It becomes frustrating if you do have to lose ones when you’re trying to build. At the end of the day, the decision is my own if I let people go. That would always be the case.”

Lowton hit the headlines earlier this season after he scored a contender for Goal of the Season in Villa’s win over Stoke City.

He chested up a cleared corner and volleyed it into the top corner from all of 30 yards out – relive the wondergoal below.
